Dental Implants Cavities blog postI had a patient ask me today, “Can dental implants get cavities?”

The short answer is, no

Dental implants are made either from titanium or zirconium – neither of which can get cavities (or caries) like natural teeth.

Cavities are caused by acids derived from bacteria, food, drink, supplements, and medications. Anything you consume that lowers the pH below 5.5 can start destruction to your teeth. The acids can attack your teeth, gums and bone. And this can happen all within seven minutes.

However, if you have a combination of dental implants and natural teeth, the natural teeth can get cavities. So, remember the 7 Minute Window.

Take-home message: Dental implants cannot get cavities. Teeth can get cavities.
